The fifth day of the Lenten Retreat began with a spirit-filled praise and worship session led by Rev. Fr Andrew Leo D’Souza the Parish Priest. This was followed by the solemn devotion of the Way of the Cross, helping the faithful to reflect deeply on Christ’s passion.
The theme of the day was: “The Sacraments instituted by Jesus are channels of God’s grace.”
The preacher for the day, Rev. Dr Ronald Serrao from Jeppu Seminary, delivered an insightful and enriching talk on the sacraments.
He explained in detail the Sacraments of Initiation—Baptism, Confirmation, and the Holy Eucharist—highlighting their significance in the life of every Christian. He spoke about how Baptism cleanses us and welcomes us into the Church, and emphasized the importance of Confirmation, through which we receive the gifts and fruits of the Holy Spirit and are called to actively serve in the parish.
He also shed light on the Sacraments of Healing, especially Reconciliation and the Anointing of the Sick, explaining their role in restoring spiritual and physical strength. The importance of receiving the sacraments worthily and regularly was clearly emphasized.
At 6:00 p.m., the Holy Eucharistic Celebration was presided over by Rev. Dr Ronald Serrao, with Rev. Fr Peter Gonsales, Principal of St Lawrence English Medium School, as the concelebrant.
During the homily, the significance of the Sacrament of Reconciliation was further explained—its connection with the Lenten season, the need for repentance, and the importance of preparing ourselves spiritually.
The adoration service focused on the Anointing of the Sick, reminding the faithful of Jesus’ healing power and the importance of faith. Special prayers were offered for the sick, the suffering, families, neighbors, and all those in need, as well as for the universal Church, priests, and religious.
The day concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks delivered by Rev. Fr Andrew Leo D’Souza, expressing gratitude to Fr Ronald for guiding the faithful in understanding the importance of the sacraments, especially during the Lenten season.
The retreat concluded with prayers offered to God, followed by the Angelus and a thanksgiving hymn.
